What Is A Bot?
A bot is an artifical life form designed to emulate a real player. The
word bot is derived from the word robot. There are a variety of bots that
can be created to fight against you or assist you in combat. Bots are
more known in the First Person Shooter genre than any other genre of game
available. There are basically two different types of bots, they are
Client Side bots and Server Side bots.
Client Side bots are generally written in C/C++ as stand-alone programs.
In the realm of Client Side bots the controversial proxy bots are found.
Client Side bots are often confused with proxy bots, however not all client
side bots are proxy bots. A proxy bot sits between the client and the server
and aids the client in his/her ability to play the game. Proxy bots are
considered cheating by server administrators and are illegal to be used on
public servers. Questions regarding where to find proxy bots will receive no
reply.
Server side bots are created by modifying the game's code to produce a modification
commonly referred to as a Mod. Server side bots are obviously run by the server rather
than Client side bots which are run by the client. There are more server side
bots available than client side bots. Server side bots can be programmed to play
either deathmatch, teamplay, co-operative or any other third party modifications.
