I'd like to welcome, Plumb and his highly anticipated, Team Fortress Bot to Bot Epidemic. The bot is based off the best bot for Quake, FrikBot X. Here is a clip from the latest news post:
Finally, and there has actually been a few people waiting for this, the Team Fortress Bot has arrived at BotEpidemic. There's nothing up for grabs as of yet due to Christmas and the fact that being back from university for a while means I need to do the real life(tm) rounds. But so far the bot is 56% complete and counting...
I know I'm looking forward to it's first release!

I got this in my mail box this afternoon, from Gleeb:
If you've been watching the Quake 1 news recently, you may have noticed the new word 'EBSP'. What is it? EBSP is a funky way of distributing assest for a map in the original map file, while still maintaining compatibility with the original and older engines that are available now. Now, why would I be telling you this? Well, with full approval with Daz, the map CRDM2, entitled 'Mechanical Tears', has been converted to this great new format, with all the trimmings you would expect for a Quake 3 map, including hi-res, hi-colour textures, coloured lighting,and even a waypoint for the famed FrikBot. This map, and GQ, an EBSP-enabled engine, are both available at http://www.planetquake.com/gzone/gq/.
It has FrikBot support!

ParboiL has released version 0.90 of FBCA KT. This is the first version in which the bots do all jumps under QuakeWorld. Here is what's new:

The long-awaited FrikBot X for Classic Quake, has finally been released. The bot is almost a complete re-write of the previous version, and will most certainly be deemed the "best Quake bot" at the current time. There are too many new features to list here, and you can't really summarize them all. The bot plays incredibly well, without cheating, I can't compete with it at Skill 3. You can get it here!

I will write up a review of the bot over the next few days.

Arwing has released his Nirvana: Life of the Fighter modification for Classic Quake, it is a very AI rich modification featuring both single player and deathmatch flavours. Here's the scoop:
  • 22-piece Multimodel engine
  • Frikbot version n6 w/multimodel support
  • A very advanced enemy AI
  • Imported monsters (new total of 31)
The modification comes in two seperate downloads, the core and the model / sound pack, which weighs in at 24Mb. Well, what are you waiting for? Go get it!

New FrikTF Released | May 23, 2001 - 4:22 EST | Ze0


I spotted over at Inside3D, THE site for Quake related goodness, that a new version of the Team Fortress compatible, FrikTF is out. Here's what the author had to say:
A new version of FrikTF has been released. This release fixes major problems with the QuakeWorld version, such as bots repeatedly being kicked for changing skin.

This version also fixed compile-time errors found within the source code.

Frik-TF is available at:

The problem of bots being displayed with the wrong skin is still present in the QuakeWorld version. I would expect the base skin to be rendered, but it shows the engineer skin instead.

If anyone wants to take a crack at solving the problem, go ahead. Be sure to look at the attempted workaround in overloaded function "infokey" found in "bot_qw.qc" to see how it should work.

Quest has updated the FrikBot Waypoint Depot (as promised) with 20 new waypoint sets.
Plumb's gone and done the last 9 waypoint sets of the brainstorm series (there is no bsdm8 btw)

Gilgamesh has done the first 8 of the dapak series, a collection of some of the finest maps of '97.

And last Plumb has updated 3 of his waypoint sets, e2m1, bsdm5 and rcdm7.

Rudd sends news of the Xreaper mod being revised, based on the reformed reaper bot. Bot features include:
  • reformed reaper bots : Intelligent emulated opponents.
  • multimapcycle : You can create multiple mapcycles, and in-game specify the one you want to use.
  • deathmatch 3 : Deathmatch 3 rules; weapons stay, respawn items.
  • deathmatch 4 : [Unofficial] Deathmatch 4 rules; weapons stay, 1/2 respawn time.
  • multiple skins : Multiple skin support, you can choose 1 out of 20 skins.
  • ycam chasecam (by Harvey Lee) : Chasecam for in deathmatch.
  • hook : Grapple hook, implemented as a new weapon.
  • remote admin support : Remote admin support, you can enter a code and change some of the server side variables/commands, like deathmatch, timelimit and kick.
  • enhanced intermission : At intermissions you'll hear music and all players, bots, spikes, rockets etc are frozen at their place.

Some sad news from our friend , Raymond. This is from an email with him on his Frik TF Bot:
The only page for the TeamFortress bot that can be found is on eGroups: http://www.egroups.com/group/friktf (and some of the files are not up to date. Better fix that.)

The development for the bot is basically stalled. It stalled when I had trouble getting the bots to understand the TF Goals, resumed for a while when I merged the bot directly with the Teamfortress 2.5 source (a good step improving development), but stopped working on it a bit later.

I did manage to get the bot to understand the flags on regular CTF maps, and part of the common entities that TF uses. It is doubtful that I could get the bots to understand all of the entities used by TeamFortress.

I'll be posting the latest version of the source code when I can. The development has been stalled, and it is unlikely that there will be any future releases.

Why not send him a word of encouragement? :)

Arwing XL has let us know that his Quake modificaton, Minion: TFU (Ten Feet Under) is nearing completion. He had this to say:
Minion: TFU should be avaible in about 10 more days, if I have the developement planned accordingly. It takes around 3 hours to add-in, balance, and test new characters, and there are only TWO more remaining! After that, it will be on to the teamplay AI, then onto the final arena maps.

Stephen Dobbs has released two new bots for Quake1. They are the DOBBSbot and the GYPObot. The DOBBSbot is designed to play deathmatch, teamplay, and cooperative while the GYPObot was made as a base for those interested in creating their own bots.

Arwing XL has released Minion Final for Quake.
Some of the features include:
  • a remake of the original Minion by Coffee
  • a new level of AI to fight against, having such abilities as combat movement, jumping up and down from ledges, camping, and tracing the player throughout the level
  • WEIRD.BSP has been been recreated from scratch by me(sorry Coffee. It had to go)
  • team bots have been added to help out in matches where there is more than one opponent. Use impulse 79 until your team is filled out.(if you try to bring in more members you will only get the "no more team members allowed" message. If one dies, tough luck.

Raymond Martineau has released a development build of Frik-TF. Here are the major changes since the last official release:
  • Bots no longer cause the fast respawning of TFgoals
  • Implementation of team alliances (for maps such as hunted, and border1.)
  • Bots will suicide when they get stuck in a wall, preventing other problems.
  • Spy vs. Spy bug fixed
  • "savedgamecfg" bit to disable chat text works properly.

After an exceedingly long time, and after being kicked around by real life, Coffee has finally updated the AI Cafe. This update brings a new tutorial to his vast archive it explains taking a different approach to navigation. He also rambles on about his upcoming TutorBot modification, BotBall. Here's a tid-bit:

Welcome to Project Botball. This one-on-one sport puts you in an arena with a bot, a ball, and a goal. Your job is to catch the ball and run it into the goal. However, that is the bot's job as well, and he will try his hardest to kill you and score that point himself. Think of it as football with big guns. You will have special weapons and entities at your disposal to help you score points. The emphasis is on running, yet you may not be able to run straight at the goal. The bot may be there with a rocket launcher, waiting for you.

I'm looking forward to it. The AI Cafe Message Board has also been repaired after a fairly long period of borkedness.

The long awaited, Quakability: Bot Arena has been released. The modification, has a similar sense of play to Q3:A/UT but is for Classic Quake, it features bots to play against, much like Q3:A and/or UT. Here's a list of features:
  • the possibility to play four different game modes, two multi-player ones (classic Quakability, WEaponability) and two single-player ones (Quakability Bot and Quakability Arena).
  • a highly customizable LAN games
  • 16 bots, 15 arenas, 16 soundtracks.
  • an enhanced version of the TutorBot : Bots look different, speak different and fight different ! They all have different skill levels and some uses moves others don't.
  • the confidence factor : bots play differently according the number of frags they can have on a row.

Canibal Quake is a Quake1 / QW mod allowing two new game types in multiplayer or against bots(it includes Frika C's FrikBots). The main aspect of this modification is to eat your opponent's corpse after killing him ( ok, this may sound a bit disgusting, but it can be fun - really :-)), thus gaining health and bonus frags.

I received the following from TheFatal earlier this morning:

I've released the source code and binary for my QW client emulation server. Basically, this allows people to create fully working true client bots inside their QuakeC code with just a few lines of code (as opposed to the previously required pages of code with redone weapon functions and custom animation code, even still resulting in a bot that isn't a full client). The source code distribution also includes qwprogs.dat source for an example bot that runs and fires, so people can figure out how it's done easilly.

Word comes in from Coffee that the AI Cafe has posted a tutorial guiding you through how to add 'Bot Championship' rules to a bot:
This new deathmatch mode offers gameplay a bit similar to Quake 3: Arena; as you defeat each bot, he is replaced with a harder, faster opponent, thus giving you a ladder-like tournament feel.

Coco sends in news on the Quake mod he is working on, Quakability: Bot Arena, which offers a game-style similar to the single player games in Q3:A and Unreal Tournament. Some of the current features:
  • 16 bots with different appearances, skills, fighting and speaking habits.
  • 15 arenas made up of some of the best deathmatch maps by well-known map authors such as Sten Uusvali, Paul "Peej" James, Graeme Timins and others (I got their thumbs-up for this), each arena having its own music.
  • Greatly-enhanced version of the Tutor-Bot. The bots are
    now terribly aggressive and the mod thus address a public of "hardcore" gamers (difficulty, of course, is introduced gradually in the Bot Arena mode)
The mod is scheduled for a release in February and beta-testing of it will be beginning soon.

Some guy called Ze0 has released the first public version of his Quake mod, Fist Fight, a modification in a similar vein to the Q3:A and UT single-player games. The player fights against individual bot characters, based on the FrikBot, through increasing levels of difficulty until reaching the final boss, all the time using their fists (naturally). TheFatal released a new version (both binary and source) of the GeneBot the other day, with the following comments on the latest version of his project to get a "fully working true client base" for bot authors to build on:
I put a stuffcmd-catching system in, so bots catch certain commands sent to them like "color", "skin", "team", etc. I've also added some teamplay AI (follow the leader) and made them not attack teammates when teamplay is enabled (they check for teammates by comparing "team" userinfo strings). This allows them to work decently with CTF and other team-based mods. Those are pretty much the only changes, but it still makes for a considerable improvement.

I've designed a bot for QuakeWorld using the Quake source code release which operates directly off of the server. It can be used with any mod and operates exactly like a real player.

I'm hoping to get people to notice this and build onto it to make a nicer even more advanced bot (the source code is available in full) now that I've already done all the grunt work by hacking through the engine to make it accept clients which have no net channels, as I can't work on the AI more myself due to my current job at Crytek.

CyberKewl sends word of a bug in the Ultimate Devestation Mod:
To all who have played Ultimate Devastation MOD 1.5b, please delete these two files from your udm\progs directory: "b_rock0.bsp" and "b_rock1.bsp" IF you
run udm on Winquake. These two files seem to cause Winquake to crash.
Also, for anyone having problems with running GLQuake on their "Magic3D Voodoo 2" video card, it seems it might be worthwhile to download and use Creative drivers, as this may help to fix the problem.

FMODS has news of the release of version 0.06 of the Frogbot 2000 mod, by Justice. There are two new main features included, although they are only in early stages of development, those being grappling hook support and what Justice calls 'implementation of bot actions':
Eventually, the bot will learn how to run away, camp guard and attack places and enemys. Again, this was just for testing purposes, nothing fancy, but you can tell the difference.

Malcolm Lim has released a small update to the UDM. Version 1.5B contains new models and sounds, some fixes, a replacement weapon for the Nailgun and updates to the bot code so that they will use wind tunnels and the bot models should now 'yaw' like the player's does. TheFatal has released a new version of his Cooperative QuakeWorld mod that, as the title suggests, add Cooperative play to QuakeWorld. As well as having improved monster AI (faster and more efficient) this version also includes some bots:
The bots are pretty good and have the best physics model I've written so far for Quake/QuakeWorld. I wrote them in just a few hours, but they turned out much better than I expected they would. There are options on the server to disable them, set a constant bot number, set a max bot number, and various other things (so you can run bots on a dedicated coop QW server if you want and have no problems).

Version 0.35 of the Frogbot CTF mod has been released by numb. Some interesting new features, including 'Auto Loading' bots (these features taken from both 0.34 and 0.35):
  • Auto loading bots
    - use "scratch1" cvar in NQ
    - use "scratch1" localinfo key in QW
    - the scratch1 value is broken into two parts:
    the number left of the decimal indicates how many bots join at the start of each level and the decimal valuerepresents the timed intervals (in minutes) at which botswill connect/disconnect
    + 'scratch1 3.5' will spawn 3 bots, and one bot will disconnect in 5 minutes
    - after 5 more minutes, another bot will join the game
    - and so on
    + 'scratch1 5.25' will spawn 5 bots, and one bot will disconnect in 2.5 minutes
    - after 2.5 more minutes, another bot will join the game
    - and so on.
  • Chatting bots
    - in deathmatch only
    - bots will pause to chat like a real player
  • Fixed QW ping (i had the check field reversed (duh!)

Justice has released version 0.03c of the Frogbot 2000 mod (Source: FMODS). Justice describes this update as not being "very big" the changes list is, although there is quite a lot of new stuff, some of which is listed below:
  • Added user defined Teamnames
    You can view in a .bot file how this is done. You can make
    the teamnames use the same letter/number combination as in
    the botnames, so if you want to know the number for a letter
    make a name , and copy that to the teamname.
    Also teamstats/score work now ( when dying or at end of game )
  • Added a few new maps.
    dm3,dm4,dm6,ztndm1,ztndm2,ztndm3,ztndm6,ultrav,debello,
    agressr,androm9,e1m2,e1m7
  • Enabled Frog's higher Ground feature. The bot will try to go to a higher place , so it has
    some advantage over you.
  • Modified the rjumping function a bit , so rjumping should be a bit better, but it requires a
    lot more work.
Justice has received some new code from Frog himself, so the next release will not be next Friday as Justice wants to take some time out to check out this new code. Learn more at FMODS.

numb has released version 0.33 of the Frogbot CTF mod. This release looks like it is mainly to apply some tweaks as a glance at the changes list will show:
  • Fixed teleporter issues (thanx to gibbie's new e1m3 markers!)
  • Bots no longer remain stuck on or under a lift that is squishing them
  • Escorting bots will remain still if their escort entity is still
    - provides more tactical manuevering for attacks on enemy base
  • Optimized while loops in EXPERT mode

  • Weapon swith code is now uniformly QW style

There is news on FMODS of the release of Justice's Frogbot 2000 mod. He describes the goal of the mod is to "improve the bot's AI and capabilities" with new features such as button support that haven't appeared in official Frogbot versions. The new features of the mod:
  • Rocketjumping bots.

  • Better swimming bots
  • DM6 platform enabled
  • Better strafing capabilities
  • Bots wait for you to come around corners

FMODS has news of the release of a new version of Erazor's Frogbot 0.13 Test Special Edition, a mod of the Frogbot using the latest 0.13 Test source code. The following new features are present in this version:
  • Bots talk feature
  • Each bot can have their own ping
  • Each bot also has a realistic packet loss, that is dependant of their ping.

numb has released version 0.30 of the Frogbot CTF mod. The new features/changes list is rather long as the mod has gone from 0.26 to 0.30 in one jump so I've only picked out certain ones below:
  • More goal tweaks!
    - items are now tested against a "plan" state
    - goal desires are weighted against map size
  • Extended library of dynamic conversion utilities
  • - using Methabol's "PureCTF" code
  • - added teleport workarounds for e1m3 and dm4
  • New e1m3 waypoints
  • Changed how roaming bots traverse the level:
    - they now make use of the "wait" state rather than actually camping an item

Word comes in from numb that he has released version 0.24 of the Frogbot CTF mod. The new features for this version:
  • Added Matt 'asdf' McChesney's fixes for the secret dm6 door
  • Auto team in observer mode now works again
  • Fixed the bot ping code for QuakeWorld
  • First ping and packetloss based skill settings (QuakeWorld only)
    - must be recompiled with the SKILL definition in settings.h
    - only semi-implemented and not fully tested
  • Included Escher's 'Debello' and 'Ultra Violence' (markers by gibbie)
    - needs to be recompiled to make use of them because of progs.dat size limitations
He also sent his own commentary on the release as it is now:
I'm happy with the way this mod is turning out. I've only been able to work on it a few hours a week, sometimes just twenty minutes or so before i go into work, or on the weekends... and with the help i've recieved from robert field, gibbie, and asdf, i think frogbot ctf is becoming a really great mod. thanks to all who have taken time to contribute feedback, or just downloaded and played. i also would like to aplogize for the features i wasn't able to include, and for the code which was broken across versions changes. i think i've tidied it up pretty nicely. thanks everyone!

    - thanks to Frog, modified client spawn code to reduce fatal errors on maps with incomplete zones

Version 0.15 of the Frogbot CTF mod has been released by numb. This version seems mainly to be the result of a bug hunt:
  • Dug around inside the "team" fields:
    - fixed the crash on MOST maps associated with adding bots
    - fixed the NULL function associated with BestEnemy
  • Discovered that CTF maps have the following problems:
    - the custom ctf maps have clipping issues
    - cft5 is missing the "info_intermission" destination
  • Removed bot spawning from the observer menu =(
  • Improved overall program flow where ctf rules are concerned

numb has released version 0.13 of the Frogbot CTF mod, the mod having skipped from 0.11 to 0.13 as 0.12 was a private release. The changes and new features in 0.13:
  • Changed/fixed some team issues.
  • Bots now have QW team names.
  • Began adding custom QW skin support.

  • Changed manual flag placement:
    - you can only spawn flags of the team you're presently on

Cronos sent word that he has released Version 1.06 of his CronosBot for Quake. Here is an excerpt of what Cronos has to say.

This release sees a lot of changes to the movement code of the bots once again, although this mainly affects fixed waypoint levels. Navigation is now divided into fixed waypoint levels with pre-pathed joins, fixed waypoint levels dynamically joined (currently none) and dynamic waypoint levels. What this all means is that the bots can play any level but on a pre-programmed level they move around more optimally. In fact their play is really very good for some nice one on one action. Even for better players the harder skills should provide a reasonable opponent certainly on a par with any of the better known bots. I have also spent some time improving bot movement on dynamic waypoint levels. Teleports and lifts have now been built into fixed waypoint levels properly although in a dynamic level they are treated slightly differently.

He also notes that the second contest is starting and is based on the level JNDM6, more details can be found on the CronosBot webpage.

Version 0.08 of Frika C's Quake Bot, the FrikBot, has been released. Here is a little rundown on the bot for those who don't know:
FrikBot is a unique bot designed to plug-in to other mods. By changing a few lines in the code, the bot can play the mod in a matter of minutes. Useful to Quake C coders, the bot has a number of dedicated supporters that have

Word comes in from numb that version 0.04 (now Beta) of the Frogbot CTF mod has been released. The new stuff:
  • Added detailed scoring from the Threewave and Ctfbot+ mods.
  • Added XXX EXPERT CTF scoring to ClientObituary (scoring needs work!).
  • Added ctf skins - enabled with game options "custom" and "ctf" (NQ only).
  • Re-enabled "simple planning" for bots (use the "simple" command).
  • Moved from alpha to beta by fixing the following two bugs:
    - Fixed a stupid mistake in the base goal evaulation.
    - Fixed a bug that prevented flags from reappearing at their base after being captured.

  • Gibbie needs water support and platform support to make more waypoints for other ctf maps.

numb sends word on the first public release of a new FBMOD, Frogbot CTF (or FbCTF). As the name suggests this mod has the Frogbot playing CTF. The latest changes in Alpha 3:

HW Frogbot Re-Released | September 5, 1999 - 3:30 EST | Cube


Version 1.2 of the Holywars + Frogbot has been re-released by numb with the following new stuff:
  • Bot chat: can be turned off with the "nochat" command
  • The halo is now invisible when it's owner is holding Ring of Shadows (for both QW and NQ - this was broken in previous versions.
  • Halo spawning is more like the quake 2 version.
  • EFDM10 support.
  • Modified serverinfo bots to include current number of active bots because bots do not appear in server browsers.
  • Source code has been optimized in some areas, and of course, is included.

maXtron has word on a new bot, the Squirt Bot, created by Squirt. Currently the only way to get at the bot is via this download link. Apparently Squirt wants people to download the bot and then try and decide on whether it is based on the Tutor Bot.

Bot Epidemic's very own Ultimate Devastation MOD has made its first release. Version 1.0 of the mod boasts a number of excellent features including 7 new weapons, rocket jumping bots, visible weapons, gibbable corpses and a whole lot more! Also released is an Ultimate Devastation Map Pack which contains 24 of the author's favourite maps. The source code for the mod is also available on the page. Have fun!

Cronos has posted some news onto the site of his CronosBot (Source: maXtron), including a paragraph that indicates he may release the source to the bot pretty soon (if there's enough interest). If not he'll wait until he has added HolyWars support and some "other changes", which would mean the source wouldn't be released for a couple of months.

Skorpion, of Skorpion's Omi Bot Page, sends in word that on his site he has posted Omicron Bot routes to two new Quake maps, One Man Army and Rediscovered Fantasies. Interestingly while both maps are for Quake they utilise Q3Test textures. The route for OMA is included in the map archive and the route for RF can be found here.

CronosBot Happenings | August 22, 1999 - 1:31 EST | Cube


The CronosBot has now moved to a new home at http://www.planetquake.com/cronos/ and Cronos has updated with word that he has begun delving into HexenC and is now going to port the bot over, while moving the Quake port onto the backburner:
...looks like it's going to be quite complex to port the CronosBots over, so I'll be doing that whilst occasionally tweaking the Quake bots.
As far as I know this will be the first bot released for Hexen (if/when it is released).

Ze0 informs me of a new Quake bot he as found, called the Unknown Bot (yes, I am aware of the irony). There is little in the way of information on the bot's site but from reading the readme it appears the bot currently supports DM1 and DM3 and there are bot personalities.

Some Quake bot news rounded-up from maXtron today:
  • Firstly there's a new bot on the Quake scene called the KoolioBot, which is based on Coffee's Tutor Bot. Features include several variations on deathmatch, limited (currently) Rocket Arena support and Co-Op play.
  • Secondly RadRatXL has posted an upgrade of his Nirvana vs. The World mod onto his site. The upgrade adds support for teamplay (Red vs. Blue) support to the mod.

Cronos sends word that he has released version 1.03 of his CronosBots:
I have virtually rewritten most of the movement code and AI routines for this version, as well as making quite a few small changes.

I have also added Rocket Arena rules to the bots, with a simple command the rules are switched to rocket arena. This is best played in conjunction with the rocket arena pak file and it knows the level order of the latest version of RA.
There are also several other changes and fixes in this version.

TheFatal has released a new version of his Quake bot, Sigmund (which plays co-op and DM). Here's what TheFatal had to say on it:
The physics code is quite good now and it uses a nice random-roaming
routine as it learns the level from the player's actions. The source
code has been released with this version, which should prove to be a
good base for starting a new bot (due to the physics code being all
packed into the simple BotMove function).
As TheFatal says the source to the bot is also available (in a separate download).

RadRatXL sends word that on his site he has made available an "open-finish" copy of his newest Quake mod, Nirvana vs. The World. If no more bugs are found (or improvements suggested) then this will turn out to be the final release.
