Interview with Brendan "Spyro" McCarthy

Spyro is the author of the ODD Bot for Half-Life.

celtic88: How long has the Odd Bot been in development?

Spyro: About 1 month.

celtic88: Has it been easy working with Botman's source code?

Spyro: Yeah, Botman's code is well layed out. The only thing is we have a slightly different style style because I come from a Java background.

celtic88: How often do you work on the bot?

Spyro: When I get spare time! I prabobly get an average of 1-2 hours a day done. I spend too much time *testing* in Front Line Force :)

celtic88: What are some of the planned features for future releases?

Spyro: With the latest release just out today, I'll prabobly wait and see what sort of feedback I get about it. I got lots of stuff from TFC fans last time asking me to fix the sentry guns and stuff, so i did (hopefully:)). If anyone out there actually plays the ODD Bot with Front Line Force, I'd love to hear from you.

celtic88: Is there any mod in particular (TFC,FLF) focused on more than the other when coding the bot?

Spyro: The last release was mainly for TFC. I have some ideas for FLF floating around, but I'd also like to see where they take to mod with version 2.0.

celtic88: Some may think that supporting 3 mods equally may leave out the full potential if you had only worked on one, being able to add more features, etc. what do you think?

Spyro: I made the bot for me in the first place, and showed it to some friends. They said it was pretty good, so I released it. The reason it supports all 3 is that they were the mods I was playing at the time. I don't just stick with playing one game the whole time, so why should my bot? It's not too hard to add more specific features, and it keeps me fresh.

celtic88: Do you see yourself still working on the bot 6 months down the road?

Spyro: I'll prabobly work on it until I finish uni (4 more years) or I get sick of it (not likely anytime soon). I don't see it getting to the level of the cgf bot (WOW!) but maybe if I get to do some work in AI at uni.

celtic88: What is your favorite Half-Life mod?

Spyro: Prabobly FLF at the moment, but there are quite a few good ones around.

celtic88: Anything else you'd like to add?
