25th Of March 2001 - The End Is The Beginning Is The End

As you all are well aware of, this site has not been updated for a long time. I am in fact, busy with my college assignments and upcoming exams. In a few days time, i will be releasing the source code for Hellfire Arena 1.6 (which i was working on together with an alt-fire mode that is not fully functional yet) to the public. This is to allow other modders to continue my work, especially Eternal Arena.

I have just given the source code to Corven The Crow (author of Eternal Arena), so that he can improve his mod's UI menus and add some new features to his mod. The source code is NOT very neat, so it'll be very difficult for some to actually read it. This does not mean it is the end of Hellfire Arena, but rather a break. I may return some day to continue working on Hellfire Arena, but who knows?

2nd Of February 2001 - Updated Instagib Tutorial

Made a small update to the instagib tutorial i wrote, check it out.

1st Of February 2001 - New Instagib Tutorial

I've just written my first Quake 3 tutorial which is an Instagib tutorial. It's a pretty simple tutorial, and it works with the old 1.17 source code and the new 1.27 code as well. This tutorial was actually requested by Randar, who said that i should write a tutorial for the Instagib mode that i used in Hellfire Arena, whereby the bots are able to roam around the maps normally like a normal game even without any items to pick up on the map. He says that there are many Instagib mods out there that had their bots standing there waiting to be gibbed instead of roaming around the map looking for items / opponents. So which is why i wrote this tutorial. If you have any questions regarding this tutorial, you are free to contact me. Enjoy.

28th Of January 2001 - Hellfire Arena 1.25 Released

Here comes another version of Hellfire Arena, this version has a couple of bug fixes from version 1.2.
One of them is dreadful "Awaiting For Snapshot" when trying to play multiplayer games. This problem has been fixed in this release, but this does NOT guarentee that Hellfire Arena will work on multiplayer games. I only did a small test by running a dedicated server and joined the server locally (with 1 pc). This version will automaticly disable the motion tracker when a multiplayer game is set up. You can only use the scanner in skirmish games for now. Besides this, some H.U.D problems have been fixed as well (more specifically the new hud style).

There are also some new features that has been added such as an option to allow the flame thrower to be randomly spawned (together with ammo) on ANY map, option to toggle ALL MAPS in any game type (you can now play CTF maps in FFA, FFA only maps in Tournament, etc), 3rd person crosshair, option to toggle progressive zooming, option to toggle team colored skins and frags per hour display in scoreboard. If you enable the option to randomly spawn a flame thrower, the flame thrower will randomly move to another location after 60 seconds. This is to ensure that all players have access to this weapon.
Some of these new features were added based on user suggestions. I'd like to thank Ken Hudson and Razzer22 for their cool suggestions.
There's more to come in future releases of Hellfire Arena - this is just the beginning. And if you have a suggestion, don't hesitate to post your suggestion(s) in the forums or via email. If i can code it, your suggestion may be part of Hellfire Arena's list of features. Go grab this new version while it's still hot.

23rd Of January 2001 - Apologies, Hellfire Arena 1.2 Released

First and foremost, i'd like to apologise to Corven the Crow and Fusion, for using the specially made Eternal Arena machinegun model in Hellfire Arena. I'd like to thank Fusion for giving me permission to use his newly created machinegun in Hellfire Arena 1.2 and also Paul Hassett for giving me permission to use his cool Flame Thrower model in Hellfire Arena 1.2.

I am now releasing Hellfire Arena 1.2 which took me some time to fine-tune, fixing some small bugs and adding a few neat features that i'm sure you all love. The first new feature in this release is the addition the new Flame Thrower weapon into the arena. You can set this as a starting weapon or even replace ANY weapon in the arena with the flame thrower by just entering the Weapons Configuration menu in the Hellfire Options. What's more - you can now change the velocity of projectiles in the game, you can slow down the BFG's projectile velocity OR you can speed it up to cause mayhem. Besides that, there is also a new in game scoreboard which displays the frags/deaths in the score section AND ingame awards are now shown in the scoreboard as well for every player in the arena ! I've also created a new Hud Style , which is Hud Style 5 that looks a bit like Team Arena's "small" sized HUD. Check it out. There's of course more to what i've said, just grab this latest release and frag away.

11th Of January 2001 - Weird Beep Sound patch & New Hellfire Arena Home

There is a small and annoying sound bug in Hellfire Arena, you MUST download this file to fix the problem. Get it here. Just unzip this to where you installed Hellfire Arena and the problem should be fixed. Again, this is only for those who have ALREADY downloaded hellfire arena. Thanks goes to Quietus for notifying me on this bug.

Hellfire Arena has a new home now, hosted by Botepidemic.com. This will only mean faster access to this site, faster & mirrored downloads! Head over to the new forum to post your suggestions, ideas, problems or anything related to Quake 3 Arena and Hellfire Arena. Besides this, the screen shots page has been updated as well.

9th Of January 2001 - Hellfire Arena 1.1 Patch

I have just released a small patch for Hellfire Arena 1.1 which can be found here. This patch fixes a small bug in the tournament game, whereby if a random powerup/weapon is enabled, the warning timer may not show up after a map_restart is done. Besides that, this patch also removes the new lightning gun & railgun sounds and the new shader for the Map Selection menu which comes from Team Arena as according to Todd Hollenshead (ID Software CEO), mod authors are NOT allowed to use any graphics / sounds from TA unless they are making a TA specific mod. Many apologies goes to ID Software for using the graphics/sounds and to all of those who have downloaded them. Please download the patch to remove the new sounds & shaders & to fix the tournament game bug.

For those who have NOT downloaded Hellfire Arena yet, they do NOT need to download this patch at all.

6th Of January 2001 - Happy New Year! Hellfire Arena 1.1 Released !

First of all, Happy New Year to everyone ! Second, the much awaited release of Hellfire Arena 1.1 which is compatible with the new 1.27g point release is finally here ! I must say i have put in a lot of effort in making this mod a good one, as an extra i have added some features that i have not mentioned so far - such as the new separate Head/Model selection in the player's model menu, which may look like UI Enhanced version, but it's of course different. I've been working on that feature for some time already and finally got it to work flawlessly. Another new feature worth mentioning is the Add Map feature, this feature allows the player to add maps to the map rotation WITHOUT typing in the mapname ! This will of course make life much easier :)
There's more to what i've said, but anyway go grab it here and again it comes in two flavours - Zip Version & Installer Version.

Notice : For those who have downloaded the UI Patch some time ago - remove the file pak9-hellfirepatch.pk3 from your Hellfire Arena directory before/after installing this new version. The next version may see the addition of the new Team Arena interface incorporated with Hellfire Arena. This is of course a difficult task, as many of Hellfire Arena's core features are difficult to implement on the new User Interface.

Till then, Enjoy ! - Malcolm Lim A.k.a - CyberKewl

25th Of December 2000 - Upcoming Release, 1.27 Bug Fix patch

Ok i've got the 1.27 game source and i've managed to port ALL of Hellfire Arena's features over to the new point release. Had some problems along the way but it should be stable now. The next release should be out hopefully by this week or next week if all goes as planned. New hud styles that are similar to Challenge-Pro Mode have also been added to the upcoming release. More testing is needed to ensure that this new version is stable for public release.

I have also made a small 1.27 bug fix patch for both mod authors and gamers, you can get the patch right here. A list of what has been fixed/changed can be found here.

15th Of December 2000 - Next Release & 1.27

I've just requested from Robert Duffy the 1.27 Source Code under the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). So the next version will only work with the 1.27 point release.

The next release is coming well nicely, after my source code got deleted which i managed to re-do part of it (i had an earlier backup dated 2 - 3 days before i released Hellfire Arena 1.0).

Currently i am working on some features that enables the player to customise the weapons/items/powerups in the game. You can customise stuff such as weapon reload time, weapon damage, firing rate, etc. This feature as you all know is similar to Weapon!Mod which i'm trying to emulate. It's slightly different that's all. With this feature, you'll be able to have a lot of different game combinations which is in my opinion, fun. I'm also incorporating some parts from the Maxcarnage source code which was released at Code3Arena, especially the chain lightning gun which i was looking for almost everywhere for it. Another neat feature that i've already added for the next release is the "auto use item" which i have NEVER seen in any mod so far. This feature when turned on, will automaticly use the holdable item that the player when the player is low on health. This is especially useful when you're in a heavy fight and you want to fully maximise the usage of the medkit/teleporter.

5th Of December 2000 - Added A Poll & Forum

I've just added a poll and a forum to the site, check them out. Post any problems/suggestions/ideas you have on Hellfire Arena at the forums.
